From the author of the popular Academy books!
Note The book was originally published as Spice God.

Newly divorced, Melody ran away from a drugged out ex-husband and a controlling mother with little more than the clothes on her back. She needed a new home and a new job, not to mention a new life. Juniper Island, a thriving and posh hideaway known for its bustling summer tourism, held a promise to be exactly the change she needed. Without a second thought, Melody buys a one-way bus ticket.

Directed to the North Shore by the bus driver, she meets Tonac, the unusual chef and owner of Mayana, a restaurant tailored to serve the hard-working island locals. He gives his delicious meals away for free, but that’s not the strangest part; he doesn't serve people what they want, only what they need.

When Melody tastes the food for the first time, she finds out why the customers keep coming back, and it’s not just to eat for free or to be served by a rude waiter with no people skills. The food influences people in unique ways sometimes it gives them visions, sometimes bravery, and in others it casts a new light into the darkest and faintest of memories -- whether they wanted to remember or not.

Knowing she can do better as a server than the crabby waiter, Melody applies for a job at this strange restaurant. Tonac takes her on, but under his care, she comes face-to-face with the secrets of what he really is and who (and what) else inhabits the island.

But not all of the residents of Juniper Island are happy with Tonac and his special meals. And when Melody gets caught up in the middle, it'll take more than a few spiced apple tarts or a bowl of pumpkin soup to uncover the deep and dark secrets that some inhabitants of Juniper Island want to keep buried.

I really liked this book but I didn't love it because there were so many instances of the female lead being put off.
Super strange thing happened (female lead) WTH?! (male lead) Don't worry your pretty head about this sweetheart, I being a man, will tell you everything when I feel like it because I want to protect you. (Female lead) Ok but only because you're like really hot....

Any instance without the male lead, (female lead) You may have phenomenal powers I don't understand but I know my worth and am strong and capable!!

It was good and worth the read but I wish the strong, capable female lead we had in the last handful of chapters was portrayed throughout the whole book. Hopefully any sequels will allpw for her tp fully come into her own and be part of a functioning team dynamic instead of occasional damsel.

Melody North Shore Book 1 eBook C L Stone Reviews

I woke up this morning and just had to finish the book, and I couldn't stop to eat. So, yes, it literally made me feel hunger.

I was first introduced to the author through the Academy series which I also enjoy. This book is very different but has an interesting premise, and the main character really drew me in. It doesn't seem to lend itself to a sequel, but I would have bought it if it did. Instead I'll just have to wait for the next Academy book to be published.
Spice God begins when Melody arrives in a new town. She needs a job, and a place to stay, but she hopes she just get some food and figure it out from there. Once she gets to a strange restaurant where she didn't have to order or pay she then decided to ask the owner for a job. Tonac, the owner of the restaurant, gives her a job and a place to stay. But she doesn't realizes she's entering a whole new world now. This world is so different from anything she's ever experienced, and she's unsure how to continue on. But with her growing feelings for Tonac, and the strange things that are happening, she's got to figure it out before it is too late.

This book was okay. I sort of felt like the ending left us with more answers then questions, so that was a little frustrating. And I felt like we also didn't really learn anything about Melody. At least not what made her so different from everyone else. Other then that the characters were pretty interesting. And the whole story intrigued me right from the start.
When I started this book I was first confused then intrigued,so I kept reading. There is a story in a story, and when it is finally clear to you the story is over. Never give out plots of the story on my review let's just say I always enjoy a good read and this is it!
To be fair, I was annoyed when I started this book because I wanted CL Stone to work on her Ghostbird series. However, my annoyance soon turned to delight. Story and characters are extremely unique and compelling. This is a great stand alone book and I am curious about where the story is going from here.
A lovely fairy tale.

Melody, such a pretty name, has almost nothing at all, gets herself a job at an unusual restaurant, finds out that there is more going on than she understands . She fancies her boss, who is a bit unusual, to put it mildly, and she tries to find out more about him but no one seems to be able to give her the necessary information. She begins to understand the nature of his magic when she meets another guy with similar abilities.
After reading a series of books by an author you think you have a pretty good idea about other books by said same author. I was truly pleasantly surprised that this one was as good as the previous Ghost Bird series but just different enough to hold my interest. Mythological Gods. Way to be changing up and letting your creative juices flow. I approve and if there are more in this genre, I am getting them!!!
It is written in fairy tale style in the sense that it's more about telling the story & characters playing their parts than the characters being super developed--meaning that Tonac & Melody fall in love, but we don't get the specific details she "sees" him & he is hot and sensitive.

It is a very clever adaptation of the pantheons of gods mingling amongst us in the 21st century. And a fresh look at how the gods understand their place in existence. It was kind of cool that Melody isn't necessarily "special", but simply open...like anyone could access this level of awareness if the circumstances were right.

This world is big & developed enough that there could easily be more "modern day fairytales".
I really liked this book but I didn't love it because there were so many instances of the female lead being put off.
